In todays New Inbox file I came across the email confirmation that I printed out for a concert that I’m going to on August 25th. I’m going to see Nickelback with some friends in Denver.

This little reminder gave me a little push to make sure that I had the night blocked on my calendar (on my computer). It also reminded me that I need to email my friends to ask if they can drive.

After these two things were noted on my computer calendar, I put the printout ahead 7 days. In a week, I’ll revisit and re-asses just to make sure there’s nothing else that I need to do for this event.

Keeping The New Inbox free of clutter is a key to the successful implementation of the system. If you can’t see your folders, you can’t add more paperwork into your folders. This leads to your “stacking” your paperwork on your desk… or, on top of The New Inbox.

When you come to a new document, or one that you have not made a decision on, put it into your action bin for later today. Or, better yet, spend just a few seconds and decide when the most likely day (or month) that you will get to it next.

Get it off your mind, and off your desk, and put it into the system that brings it back to you when you want it.

Make A Placeholder (for something that’s too big for The New Inbox)

You might come across something that is too large to put into The New Inbox, but you want to be reminded about in a few days (or months). No worry! Just write the information about that item on a piece of paper, and place the paper in the day or month that you wanted to be reminded. Now, you can put that larger item “away”, knowing that the reminder will come back to you.
